BAKU, Zapotec word from the valley that means “Altar”. We are dedicated to the elaboration of huaraches and sandals using ancestral techniques with materials typical of the region.
Our brand was born from the need to preserve and promote the tradition of wearing the huarache with a contemporary and sustainable approach.
We are located in the community of Santa Catarina Cuixtla, Oaxaca, where the practice of this trade, the huarachería, has been developed through generations. We trust in our know-how, as well as in the importance of maintaining the traditions of our towns and communities and that the new generations are more aware of local, sustainable and quality consumption.
Much of the materials we use, such as leather and fur, are from the region. We approached the local farm that is dedicated to raising rabbits for human consumption, which was initially discarded, so it was important to close the circle in a more sustainable way.
We also use recycled tires for the sole of our huaraches and sandals. The leather we use is tanned using organic plant-based methods, primarily female zomacle and cinnamon bush bark.
